The purpose of the Data Management and Methodology Core is to
(a) develop, construct, document, and disseminate common constructs and protocols across data sets and research projects.
(b) collect, document, and disseminate (across projects) a data file of contextual and policy variables by state, year, and, where possible, county or other geographic level.
(c) conduct methodological work to understand the quality of the data and to identify potential biases in results due to measurement problems.
The Data Management and Methodology Core is also directed by Elizabeth Peters, with assistance from the programmer-data manager. Given the large number of data sets that will be used in this program project grant and the importance of developing common constructs and data protocols both within and across projects, this core is essential to the quality of the research produced by the group. Methodological issues are also central to this program project grant, because measures of male fertility and father involvement are only beginning to be included in surveys, and the reliability and psychometric properties of these measures are not yet well understood.
