Kara Joyner
Bowling Green

Kara Joyner, Ph.D., an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology at Bowling Green State Univeristy and PI of this project, has published studies that concern the risk of biological parenthood in adolescence.  Specifically, she has examined how the determinants of teen sex have changed over time based on retrospective reports of individuals from different birth cohorts in the National Health and Social Life Survey.  She has also used these data to examine historical change in the determinants of early parenthood and its antecedents.  Some of her other studies compare the dynamics of marriages and cohabiting relationships.

Joyner not only has access to all three waves of the Add Health contract data, but extensive knowledge of the survey.  She gained this knowledge working with the Director of Add Health, J. Richard Udry, as a post-doctoral fellow for two years at Carolina Population Center.  Her familiarity with these data also stems from her attendance of Add Health User's Workshops, as well as her collaboration on projects with other researchers using these data.  These projects consider outcomes such as sexual and romantic behavior, interracial friendship and romance, and psychological well-being. She has already constructed many of the measures proposed below using Add Health contract data.  She has also used these data to estimate multilevel models that take into account design effects.
